Fujifilm launched the FinePix A120 in April 2004 as the most approachable entry point into digital photography — 3.1 megapixels, a fixed 38mm lens, and two AA batteries replaceable anywhere. The fixed lens came straight from the analog point-and-shoot era: like an Olympus mju or a disposable Kodak, one focal length, no decisions. The CCD output has that specific early-2000s warmth that's now the whole point.
THE LOOKS
The A120 has one of the more unusual silhouettes in early digicam design — completely flat from the front when the sliding cover is closed, then dramatically rounded at the back into a barrel-shaped body. The rear is sculpted with raised organic button clusters that feel closer to a 2000s portable stereo than a camera. The 1.5-inch LCD and optical viewfinder sit on that curved face. Silver-grey plastic, one color, 102 × 51 × 42mm.
THE SPECS
The fixed 38mm lens at f/5.6 means this camera works best in good light — point it outside or at a well-lit room and it delivers clean, warm CCD images with no decisions required. The flash covers 3 metres, enough for a group shot indoors. Macro focuses down to 9cm for close-ups. AVI video at 10fps. Optical viewfinder covers 80% of the frame, useful when the 1.5-inch LCD washes out in sun. 2× AA batteries — replaceable anywhere. xD card with 16MB included. PictBridge printing. 102 × 51 × 42mm, ~100g.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
- Fixed 38mm lens — the same philosophy as an Olympus mju: one focal length, no zoom ring to fidget with, just the discipline of moving your feet to frame the shot.
- Optical viewfinder alongside the 1.5-inch LCD: both options in 2004, when LCD screens drained batteries and washed out in sunlight — the viewfinder was the practical daily choice.
- 2× AA batteries with no proprietary charger needed: standard alkalines available anywhere in the world, in a camera designed to be taken everywhere without planning ahead.
THE VERDICT
The A120 is the camera that introduced a generation to digital photography — no zoom to confuse you, no modes to navigate, just a CCD, a 38mm lens, and a shutter button. The fixed focal length means you move your feet to frame the shot, which is exactly how you learn. The output has early-2000s Fujifilm warmth that makes images from this era so appealing now. A sealed, still-in-foil example in 2025 is as close to a time capsule as compact cameras get.
