Fujifilm aimed the FinePix Z35 at teenagers and twenty-somethings in 2009 — a party camera, sold on colour and a sliding lens cover rather than specs. 10 megapixels, a 3× Fujinon zoom, a two-tone body, and Blog mode that shrank images for uploading straight from the camera. No stabilization beyond the digital kind. In Marshmallow White & Pink it's the softest of the five finishes, white body warming into pink at the edges.

NO FILTER: SHOT ON FINEPIX Z35

THE LOOKS

The Marshmallow White & Pink Z35 is a real two-tone — a white body that shades into pink across the sliding lens cover and trim, not a flat single colour. Slide the cover down and the lens and flash appear; slide it up and the front goes clean. From the back, the 2.5-inch screen centred on the rounded body reads like a tiny television from a 2000s cartoon. 90 × 58 × 24mm, 115g. Also in Quartz Black & Silver, Apple Green, True Blue, and Deep Purple.

THE SPECS

The 10-megapixel CCD carries Fujifilm's warm, saturated colour — the reason Z-series shots from this era stand out. The 3× Fujinon zoom covers 35–105mm, a middling range with no wide end, and there's no optical stabilization, so it wants daylight or a steady hand. ISO climbs to 1600 for dim rooms at the cost of noise. Blog mode resizes shots in-camera for web upload; one-touch Movie mode drops straight into VGA video. 18MB internal plus SD/SDHC. Flash to 3.1m. 90 × 58 × 24mm, 115g.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Two-tone Marshmallow White & Pink body: the white shades into pink across the sliding cover and trim — a finish, not an accent, and the softest of the five colourways.
  • Sliding lens cover as the on switch: push it down to power up and expose the lens, up to shut it — the front goes flush and clean when it's closed.
  • Blog mode resizing shots in-camera: shrinks images to web dimensions on the camera itself, so they upload straight from the card without a resize step on a computer.

THE VERDICT

The Z35 was built to be seen with, not to out-shoot anything — and on those terms it holds up. The sliding cover and two-tone body still look like a deliberate object, the CCD gives the warm colour these are collected for, and the Marshmallow White & Pink finish is the one that leans hardest into the cute-party-camera brief. The lens is short and there's no optical IS, so it's a daylight-and-flash camera. For its actual job, that's enough.
