Kyocera built the Finecam SL300R in 2003 around a single constraint: make it 15mm deep without folded optics. The solution was a swivel body — the lens panel rotates 90 degrees to open, collapsing flat when closed. The result: the thinnest camera of its era with a genuine f/2.8 aperture, fast enough for dim rooms without flash in a body that fit flat in a shirt pocket. Behind the Kyocera name: the same company that made Contax and Yashica.
NO FILTER: SHOT ON SL300R

THE LOOKS
Closed, the SL300R is 100 × 63 × 15mm of brushed aluminum — flat, pocketable, almost featureless. Open, the lens panel swings forward 90 degrees: lens, flash, and self-timer LED on the rotating front, controls and 1.5-inch LCD on the fixed rear. The shape change between off and on is more dramatic than any sliding cover or extending barrel. You have to see it work to understand why it exists. One color: silver.
THE SPECS
The f/2.8 maximum aperture at 38mm wide is the headline — fast enough to shoot in dim indoor light without flash, at a time when most compacts at this size were a full stop slower. That aperture, combined with the 15mm depth, was the spec that made the SL300R stand out. The 3.17-megapixel CCD and 3.3× zoom spanning 38–115mm covered everyday shooting well at base ISO. RTUNE processor enabled 3.5fps burst. VGA video up to 12 seconds. ISO 100–800. SD and CF card support. 100 × 63 × 15mm, 175g.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
- Swivel body achieving 15mm depth without folded optics: the lens panel rotates 90° from the display panel — a mechanical solution that was unique in 2003 and remains so.
- RTUNE processor enabling 3.5fps burst at launch: claimed world's fastest in a consumer compact in 2003, via 16-bit A/D processing that reduced color noise at the analog stage.
- Brushed aluminum on a 100 × 63 × 15mm body: the material choice lifted the SL300R well above what the 3.17MP spec suggested in terms of feel and perceived quality.
THE VERDICT
The SL300R's image quality is 2003 entry-level — 3.17MP, 1.5-inch LCD, limited ISO range — and it shows. That's not why it's worth owning. The swivel mechanism is a piece of design thinking that solved a real problem in an unexpected way, the brushed aluminum build is well above the spec's station, and the RTUNE processor's 3.5fps burst was a legitimate differentiator at launch. An odd camera that earned its oddness.
