INCLUDES FULL BOX SET WITH ALL ORIGINAL ACCESSORIES PLUS DEDICATED CASE. AN EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE OF THIS DISTINCTIVE WIFI-ENABLED CAMERA FROM 2007.

The Coolpix S50c arrived in early 2007 as Nikon's stylish entry into WiFi-enabled photography, combining the company's wave-surface design language with genuine built-in wireless connectivity. The "c" stood for connectivity, and the camera featured Nikon's Coolpix Connect service that let you wirelessly upload photos to Nikon's servers for sharing via email or web galleries—a genuinely futuristic feature for 2007, even if it only transmitted to Nikon's cloud rather than your own computer. The wave-surface industrial design with its distinctive chrome WiFi bulge made it immediately recognizable, capturing that mid-2000s moment when manufacturers thought proprietary wireless services would be the future of photo sharing.

THE LOOKS

The S50c embodies Nikon's mid-2000s S-series aesthetic with its distinctive wave-surface design—smooth curves flow across the body with a chrome bulge on one side that houses the WiFi antenna. In silver with metallic accents, it looks genuinely premium despite being a consumer compact. At just over 18mm thick it's genuinely pocketable, though the curved shape can make it feel like it's pulling away from your grip when shooting one-handed.

THE SPECS

The S50c uses a 7.2-megapixel CCD sensor with ISO 100 to 1600. The 3× Zoom-Nikkor ED lens with VR optical image stabilization covers 38-114mm equivalent. The large 3-inch LCD has 230,000-dot resolution with a wide 170-degree viewing angle. Face-Priority AF detects up to eight faces, D-Lighting recovers shadow detail, and automatic red-eye fix handles flash portraits. IEEE 802.11b/g WiFi connects to Nikon's Coolpix Connect cloud service for wireless photo sharing.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Built-in WiFi connectivity: One of the first consumer compacts with wireless capability, though limited to uploading to Nikon's servers rather than direct local transfers.
  • Wave-surface industrial design: The flowing curves with chrome WiFi bulge created a distinctive, premium aesthetic that set it apart from rectangular competitors.
  • 3-inch LCD with 170-degree viewing: The large screen with exceptionally wide viewing angles made composition and playback comfortable from almost any position.

THE VERDICT

The Coolpix S50c is an intriguing artifact from the early days of WiFi cameras. The wave-surface design is genuinely attractive and the build quality feels premium, but the WiFi implementation's limitation to Nikon's cloud service rather than direct computer transfers undermined what should have been a standout feature.
