Nikon announced the Coolpix SQ in February 2003 and it looked like nothing else — a near-perfect square of brushed aluminium with a lens panel that rotated 90 degrees in both directions. Forward for normal shooting, flat for waist-level, reversed for a self-portrait in 2003. The diamond-cut logo, aluminium lens ring, and one-button dock that charged and uploaded simultaneously made it feel like a product from a different category entirely.

THE LOOKS
The SQ is silver and only silver — brushed aluminium on every face, with the lens panel flush to the front when rotated to shooting position. The body is 83 × 85 × 25mm, almost perfectly square, with the 1.5-inch LCD on the rear and a minimal set of controls along the right edge. At 216g fully loaded it has a density that surprises you — this is a metal object, and it feels like one. The COOL-STATION dock sits under it, angled slightly, completing the design.
THE SPECS
The 3.1-megapixel CCD delivers early-2000s Nikon color — warm, slightly soft, exactly the output people are chasing from this era. The f/2.7 maximum aperture at the wide end is notably fast for 2003 and helps in lower light. The 3× Zoom-Nikkor covers 37–111mm, practical for everyday shooting. Macro focuses to 4cm for close detail. The COOL-STATION dock charges the battery and transfers files simultaneously with one button press — no cables to manage separately. AF assist lamp was a first for any Coolpix at launch. 83 × 85 × 25mm, 216g.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

THE VERDICT
The SQ's form factor is the whole story. A square that fits in a palm, a lens that rotates to any angle, and a body so symmetrical it has no obvious top or bottom until you look for the controls. Nobody is picking this up for the 3.1MP CCD or the 1.5-inch LCD — they're picking it up because nothing made before or since looks quite like it. The aluminium body, the rotating panel, the dock: this is the form factor people are buying.
