The µ 850 SW arrived in February 2008 as Olympus's entry point into the Tough lineup — all the weatherproofing, slightly less camera than the flagship 1030 SW, but the same metal body and the same willingness to go places most compacts refused. It was announced alongside the 1030 SW at the same press event and targeted at a wider audience: people who didn't necessarily surf or snowboard but wanted a camera that survived their actual lives. Waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof, and slim enough for a jacket pocket.

THE LOOKS
The Starry Silver finish gives the 850 SW a clean, slightly industrial presence — polished metal body with visible screws, off-center recessed lens, and a no-nonsense faceplate that makes the toughness legible from across the room. DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
- Recessed lens in a fully sealed metal body: The lens sits flush inside the casing at all times — no barrel extension means nothing to jam with sand, grit, or water, and the sealed construction handles 3m submersion for up to an hour.
- Four dedicated underwater shooting modes: Most rugged cameras were waterproof in name only — the 850 SW had specific scene modes for underwater snapshots, wide shots, and macro, treating actual underwater photography as a primary use case rather than an afterthought.
- Freezeproof to −10°C in a pocketable 136g body: The triple weatherproofing spec in a camera this slim was the whole argument for the 850 SW — it went to the beach, the ski slope, and the pool without you having to think about it.
THE VERDICT
The µ 850 SW is a camera that understood its brief completely: make a tough camera that people actually want to carry. The metal body and visible hardware give it a confidence that cheaper adventure cameras lack, the CCD sensor delivers Olympus's characteristic color in good light, and the triple weatherproofing means it goes where phones couldn't yet reliably follow. A practical, well-designed object from the period when dedicated waterproof compacts were the only real option for shooting in the elements.
