Olympus released the mju-mini Digital in September 2004 and it looked like nothing else on a camera shelf — a smoothed, irregular oval of bent aluminum that read more as jewelry than gadget. Six colors, each with a proper name: Jewellery Silver, Pure White, Cosmic Black, Crystal Blue, Velvet Red, Copper Orange. At 95 × 56 × 28mm and 115g it packed a 4-megapixel CCD and 2× zoom into a shirt-pocket body with IPX4 splash resistance.
THE LOOKS
Jewellery Silver is exactly what it sounds like — a metallic sheen that catches light differently at every angle, over fluid aluminum lines with no visible seams. The Top-Shell Barrier lens cover retracts completely into the body when the camera powers on, leaving the front face uninterrupted. The 1.8-inch high-contrast LCD sits on the rear, built for sunlight viewing. At 115g it disappears into a pocket without announcing itself.
THE SPECS
The 4-megapixel CCD delivers Olympus's characteristic natural color at base ISO — the sensor and TruePic TURBO processor combination that made early mju images so appealing. The 2× zoom covers 35–70mm, a modest but practical range for everyday shooting. Macro focuses down to 8cm for close-up detail shots. The 1.8-inch LCD has a 160-degree viewing angle on both axes, which sounds like a minor spec until you're sharing the screen with someone. IPX4 splash resistance handles rain without complaint. xD card included. 95 × 56 × 28mm, 115g.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
- Single-piece bent aluminum in six named colors: Jewellery Silver, Pure White, Cosmic Black, Crystal Blue, Velvet Red, Copper Orange — names chosen with the same care as the form.
- Top-Shell Barrier lens cover retracting completely into the body: zero protrusion when the camera powers on, the front face stays smooth and uninterrupted at all times.
- IPX4 splash resistance in a fashion-first body: weather sealing in a camera this curved was unusual in 2004 — most weather-resistant cameras at the time were rugged and graceless.
THE VERDICT
The mju-mini is one of the more beautiful cameras the early-2000s produced. The drop-shaped aluminum body looks considered rather than dated, and the CCD delivers warm, natural output that makes early digicam images so appealing now. The 2× zoom is modest and the ISO ceiling is low, but in good light the images are exactly right. An xD card is included. In Jewellery Silver, it's a design object that happens to take photographs.
