Olympus’s 2010 FE-4050 is a black compact with a 27mm wide-angle start and an early-2010s CCD look. Its glossy black face is broken by a bright silver lens barrel, making the simple body feel graphic. The 4× zoom keeps it straightforward for everyday scenes, while iAUTO handles settings automatically and six Magic Filters change the mood in-camera. It is a small, direct camera made for uncomplicated photos, not menu-heavy tinkering.

THE LOOKS

Officially Classic Black, it is deep glossy black across the rectangular front, top and sides, with a bright silver lens ring as its main contrast. Its layout is spare: flash above the lens, white Olympus lettering at top left, and a lowercase “fe” mark to the right. A fine raised perimeter frames the front plate. A 2.7-inch screen and simple four-way control pad occupy the rear. Other official colours were Starry Silver, Wine Red and Pure White.

THE SPECS

The FE-4050 uses a 12-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor — an older-style sensor for a warm, slightly soft look — with TruePic III processing. Its 4× zoom covers 27–108mm: wide enough for groups and interiors, then enough reach for details. The f/3.2–5.9 lens is brightest at wide angle and dim at full zoom, so far shots prefer good light. There is no optical stabiliser; its anti-shake mode uses higher sensitivity. It has a 2.7-inch 230k-dot screen, iAUTO, six Magic Filters and VGA Motion JPEG video. 91.7 × 56.0 × 19.9mm; 112g with battery and card.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Black body, silver optic: The bright circular lens surround stands out sharply against the deep black face, giving the FE-4050 a cleaner, more graphic look than its price suggests.

  • A framed front plate: A fine raised perimeter runs around the front, adding a small architectural edge to the otherwise simple, flat black rectangle.

  • Minimal, clearly marked layout: The small flash, white Olympus logo and lowercase “fe” mark are spread across the face with plenty of open black space between them.

THE VERDICT

The FE-4050 suits someone who wants the feel of a simple early-2010s digicam without giving up a useful wide angle. Its 27mm starting point makes group photos and rooms easier to frame than a typical budget compact, while the black-and-silver body keeps the look crisp. It is happiest outdoors or in a bright room, and the 4× zoom is modest. But for direct CCD photos, automatic shooting and playful in-camera filters, it has an easy charm.
