The Ferrari DIGITAL MODEL 2004 was built on the Olympus AZ-1 — a Japan-exclusive that the rest of the world never saw in standard form. Folded optics, a 2.5-inch high-contrast LCD with 160° viewing angle, 22 scene modes. Finished in Rossa Scuderia via a special multi-step process, with a startup screen that plays the engine sound of the Ferrari F2004 F1 car. Priced at $699 at launch — over $1200 in today's money.

THE LOOKS

The Rossa Scuderia finish is deeper and more lustrous than the 2003 model's anodized red — a special process developed to match the precise hue of the F2004 race car. The rear panel carries carbon fibre-like texture and the Prancing Horse. The box contains a Certificate of Authenticity displaying the individual serial number and autographed photos of Schumacher and Barrichello. The camera is 10,000 units. The box is part of the object.

THE SPECS

3.2MP CCD. Olympus folded-optics 3× zoom, 38–114mm equivalent. 2.5-inch LCD (210k dots, 160° viewing angle). 22 scene modes including Sleeping Portrait and Candle. Album function (12 albums, 100 images each). Ferrari engine startup sound. Rossa Scuderia finish. Carbon fibre-like rear accents. Certificate of Authenticity. 10,000 units worldwide. xD Picture Card.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Based on the AZ-1, a Japan-exclusive Olympus never sold elsewhere: the Ferrari 2004 is the only way most collectors will ever own this platform in any form.
  • Startup screen shows the F2004 F1 car and plays its engine sound: every power-on is a performance — one of the more committed details in any branded camera collaboration.
  • Certificate of Authenticity with Schumacher and Barrichello autographs: the unboxing experience was designed as part of the product, the documentation as valuable as the camera.

THE VERDICT

The 2004 steps back in resolution from the 2003 — 3.2MP versus 4MP — which follows from the AZ-1 platform. Everything else escalated: deeper red, engine sound, carbon accents, Schumacher and Barrichello signatures. It's a more theatrical object than the 2003. The AZ-1 underneath is a well-made slim compact that never left Japan. The Ferrari around it is one of the more extravagant digicam collectibles ever produced.
