Olympus mju-mini Digital
Olympus's mju-mini Digital arrived in September 2004 as a radical departure from the rectangular point-and-shoot norm — a camera that looked more like a smoothed river stone than a tech gadget. The soft curves, irregular angles, and single-piece bent aluminum body came in six colors with names to match the ambition: Jewellery Silver, Pure White, Cosmic Black, Crystal Blue, Velvet Red, and Copper Orange. At 95 × 56 × 28mm and 115 grams, it packed a 4-megapixel sensor and 2× optical zoom into a body small enough to genuinely disappear into a shirt pocket, with splash-resistant sealing keeping it practical in all weather.

THE LOOKS
In Jewellery Silver, the mju-mini has the distinctive metallic sheen that defined mid-2000s gadget design at its most optimistic — fluid lines with no visible seams, a body that looks more like a piece of jewelry than a camera. The Top-Shell Barrier lens cover retracts completely into the body when the camera powers on, preserving those clean contours. The 1.8-inch LCD sits on the rear panel with a high-contrast display built for sunlight viewing. At 115 grams, it disappears into a pocket and barely registers.
THE SPECS
4-megapixel 1/2.5-inch CCD sensor, ISO 64–400. 2× optical zoom, 35–70mm equivalent, f/3.5–4.9. Minimum focus distance 50cm normal, 8cm macro. TruePic TURBO image processor. 1.8-inch high-contrast TFT LCD (134,000 pixels), 160-degree viewing angles both axes. Splash-resistant metal body (IEC IPX4 equivalent). xD-Picture Card storage (no internal memory). 13–15 scene modes, fish-eye and soft-focus in-camera effects, movie with sound. Li-ion LI-30B battery.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
- Six metallic colors with proper names: Jewellery Silver, Pure White, Cosmic Black, Crystal Blue, Velvet Red, and Copper Orange — Olympus treated color as seriously as form, giving each finish an identity rather than a marketing adjective.
- Top-Shell Barrier lens cover: The sliding cover disappears completely into the body when the camera powers on, leaving zero protrusion and maintaining the smooth, continuous surface that made the mju-mini instantly recognizable.
- Splash-resistant in a fashion-first body: IEC IPX4 weather sealing in a camera this slim and design-forward was unusual for 2004 — most weather-resistant cameras at the time were rugged and ugly, not curved and collectible.
THE VERDICT
The mju-mini Digital is one of the more beautiful cameras the early-2000s compact era produced. The drop-shaped aluminum body holds up exceptionally well — it looks considered rather than dated — and the CCD sensor delivers the warm, natural colors that make early digicam output so appealing today. xD card exclusivity is the main practical inconvenience, but we of course provide you with one. In any of the six colors, it's a proper design object that happens to take very decent photographs.
