CONDITION: 6.8/10
Good cosmetic condition with visible signs of use including scratching on edges, scuffed rubber grip, and LCD anti-reflective coating peeling (common issue with this model), but the 16× zoom lens is in very good condition with a few grains of dust under the first element that don't affect image quality. All functions work perfectly including GPS, priced to reflect cosmetic wear and LCD coating condition.

Not as described? Full refund, we cover return shipping. 14-day returns. 1-year warranty.

Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V landed in early 2011 as a pocket superzoom that didn't ask you to choose between portability and reach. With a 16.2-megapixel back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor and a 16× optical zoom covering 24–384mm equivalent, it packed travel camera versatility into a body you could actually carry everywhere. Built-in GPS tagged photos with location data automatically, full manual controls gave enthusiasts room to experiment, and 1080p60 video recording meant you weren't compromising on motion capture either.

THE LOOKS

In champagne, the HX9V has a warm, distinctive finish that stood out from the sea of black compacts dominating the market in 2011. The body features a substantial textured grip on the front and a thumb pad on the rear, making it easy to handle despite its mostly smooth metal surfaces — secure and purposeful without looking rugged. The pop-up flash replaced the narrow window of its predecessor for more reliable illumination. At 104.8 × 59 × 33.9mm and 245g with battery, it's got enough weight to feel solid without becoming a burden. Also available in black.

THE SPECS

16.2-megapixel 1/2.3-inch back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor, ISO 100–3200. Sony G 16× optical zoom, 24–384mm equivalent, f/3.3–5.9, Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode. BIONZ processor. 3-inch XtraFine LCD with TruBlack technology (921,000 dots). Full HD 1080p60 video in AVCHD format with stereo sound. Built-in GPS with latitude, longitude, and altitude tagging. 10fps burst at full resolution. Sweep Panorama up to 42.9 megapixels. SD/SDHC/SDXC and Memory Stick PRO Duo storage.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • 16× optical zoom starting at 24mm wide: The combination of an unusually wide starting point and 384mm telephoto reach in a body this compact was the defining achievement of the HX9V — most travel zooms of the era started at 28mm.
  • Built-in GPS with full coordinate tagging: Latitude, longitude, and altitude appended automatically to every EXIF file — proper travel documentation with no external accessories or manual input required.
  • 1080p60 video with Optical SteadyShot Active Mode: Stabilized 60-frame progressive video from a pocket compact in 2011 was a serious spec, and the footage quality consistently impressed reviewers at the time.

THE VERDICT

The DSC-HX9V is the travel compact that actually traveled well. The 24mm wide end and 384mm reach covered every situation from cramped interiors to distant wildlife, the GPS made photo organization genuinely useful post-trip, and the Exmor R sensor held its own in low light. Slow startup and playback were the consistent criticisms at launch — but as a camera to carry everywhere and shoot with, it delivered on every meaningful metric. A proper capable compact from Sony's 2011 peak.
