The DSC-M2 arrived in 2005 as one of Sony's strangest and most committed design experiments: a camera held vertically like a phone, with its screen flipping out sideways and separate dedicated buttons for photo and video. The Super HAD CCD, Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar folded-path lens, and stereo mic — a first for any Sony digital camera — made it more than just a concept. This was Sony betting that casual photography was one-handed and always rolling.

THE LOOKS
In silver, the M2 is all satin aluminum and curves — a tall, narrow rectangle that sits in one hand like a TV remote, not a camera. The 2.5-inch LCD flips out 90 degrees on the left and powers the camera on as it does, leaving your thumb sitting naturally over the photo and movie buttons. The lens sits at the top on a slightly tilted axis so your wrist stays relaxed while shooting. The whole silhouette is unlike anything else Sony made.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

THE VERDICT
The M2 understood party shooting before anyone called it that. Hold it one-handed, flip the screen, point at the group — you look less like you're taking a photo and more like you're just standing there. The CCD output has that warm early-2000s character, the flash punches well for the size, and Hybrid Mode capturing video around every still is a feature phones are still catching up to. A genuinely unusual object that shoots beautifully.
