Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-N1 landed in October 2005 with an idea that seemed wild at the time—what if your camera kept a permanent photo album inside it? Every time you took a photo, the N1 saved the full-size version to your memory card like normal, but it also automatically saved a smaller copy to the camera's built-in memory. These smaller copies stayed in the camera forever (up to 500 photos), so you could always show people your pictures even if you'd already transferred everything to your computer. You could flip through them, make slideshows with music, or draw on them with a stylus—all without needing a computer at all.

THE LOOKS

The N1 has that distinctive mid-2000s Sony aesthetic with smooth curves and a minimalist approach that puts the enormous 3-inch touchscreen front and center. At 96.7 × 61.1 × 22.7mm and weighing 151 grams without battery, it's about the size of a deck of cards, with just a handful of physical buttons since the touchscreen handles most interactions. The Carl Zeiss lens sits flush when retracted, keeping the profile genuinely pocketable.

The 3-inch RGBW touchscreen LCD with 230,000 dots handles composition, playback, and all camera controls, while 26MB of internal memory automatically stores VGA copies of up to 500 images for the built-in album feature.
