Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-P9 launched in 2002 as the company's top-of-the-line subcompact — 4 megapixels, 3× zoom, and a brushed metal body that felt cool and solid in a market full of plastic competitors. The elongated shape was purpose-built for pockets: long enough to grip properly, thin enough to actually disappear into a jacket. Sony's InfoLITHIUM battery displayed precise remaining capacity rather than vague battery icons, the AF illuminator punched through low-light scenes where other compacts gave up, and the automatic lens cover meant the front element was always protected without thinking about it.

THE LOOKS

The P9's design is distinctly early-2000s Sony — a slim, elongated rectangular body in brushed silver aluminum with clean, minimal lines and a small front finger grip that actually works one-handed. The automatic lens cover retracts completely flush when powered on, keeping the face uncluttered. At 114 × 51 × 36mm and approximately 207g it sits solidly in a jacket pocket, and the metal construction gives it a weight and presence that plastic compacts of the era simply couldn't replicate.

THE SPECS

4-megapixel 1/1.8-inch CCD sensor, ISO 100–400. Sony 3× optical zoom, 39–117mm equivalent, f/2.8–5.6. 1.5-inch TFT LCD plus optical viewfinder. Autofocus with AF illuminator for low-light focusing. Shutter speeds 1/2000 to 2 seconds. Scene modes, Movie mode with sound, Clip Motion, Multi-Burst. Memory Stick storage (16MB included). InfoLITHIUM rechargeable battery, USB connection.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Brushed aluminum body with front finger grip: The metal construction and subtly contoured grip made the P9 feel premium and balanced one-handed — a different category of object from the plastic compacts it competed against.
  • Optical viewfinder alongside the LCD: In 2002, having both options mattered — the LCD drained battery and washed out in sunlight, making the optical finder a practical daily asset rather than a backup.
  • InfoLITHIUM battery with precise capacity readout: Rather than a three-bar icon, Sony's system displayed exact remaining battery percentage — a small detail that became indispensable once you'd used it.

THE VERDICT

The DSC-P9 is early-2000s Sony at its most considered: premium materials, thoughtful ergonomics, and just enough proprietary technology to keep you in the ecosystem. The 1/1.8-inch CCD delivers images with the warm, slightly soft character that makes early digicam output so appealing today, the metal body has aged beautifully, and the elongated silhouette is one of the more distinctive compact designs of its era. Memory Stick exclusivity was a tax even then — but everything else about it holds up.
