CONDITION: 7.9/10

THE CAMERA SHOWS ITS AGE AT 23 YEARS OLD BUT REMAINS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. THE ALL-METAL SILVER BODY HAS SOME DISCOLORATION AND MARKS THAN TYPICAL FOR THIS ERA, SHOWING CAREFUL BUT CONSISTENT USE OVER TWO DECADES. THE SCREEN LENS IS SCRATCHED. THE OPTICAL LENS IS PERFECT AND CLEAR. ALL FUNCTIONS WORK PERFECTLY INCLUDING SHOOTING, 6× PRECISION DIGITAL ZOOM, INFOLITHIUM BATTERY SYSTEM, MEMORY STICK SLOT, AND ALL BUTTONS. BATTERY INCLUDED. A WELL-PRESERVED EXAMPLE OF SONY'S 2002 FLAGSHIP SUBCOMPACT FROM THE EARLY DIGITAL ERA.

Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-P9 launched in 2002 as the company's flagship subcompact, packing genuine capability into an elongated metal body that could actually fit in a pocket—rare at a time when most capable cameras were substantially larger. The all-metal brushed aluminum construction felt genuinely premium in an era when most compacts were plastic, while Sony's InfoLITHIUM battery technology displayed precise remaining capacity instead of vague battery icons. With Memory Stick storage and a powerful AF illuminator for low-light focusing, it represented Sony's early-2000s philosophy: premium materials, proprietary everything, and just enough innovation to justify the price premium.

THE LOOKS

The P9's design is distinctly early-2000s Sony—a slim, elongated rectangular body in brushed silver aluminum with one rounded end and one square end. The lens retracts completely flush when powered off behind an automatic cover. At 114 × 51 × 35mm and around 200 grams it's compact enough for a jacket pocket, and the metal construction gives it a solid, quality feel that plastic competitors couldn't match.

THE SPECS

The P9 uses a 4-megapixel CCD sensor with maximum resolution of 2272 × 1704 pixels. The 3× optical zoom covers 38-114mm equivalent with f/2.8 maximum aperture at wide angle. The 1.5-inch TFT LCD handles composition and playback. Autofocus includes a powerful illuminator for low-light focusing. Images save to Memory Stick media. The InfoLITHIUM rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides accurate remaining capacity information.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Premium all-metal construction: The brushed aluminum body in an era of plastic compacts gave the P9 a genuine quality advantage in build and feel.
  • Compact 3× zoom design: Sony's engineering fit a genuine 3× optical zoom into a body slim enough to actually pocket—a real achievement in 2002.
  • InfoLITHIUM battery system: Sony's technology provided accurate remaining capacity displays, eliminating the guesswork of whether you had enough juice for the next shot.

THE VERDICT

The DSC-P9 is a well-executed subcompact from Sony's early-2000s lineup. The combination of 4-megapixel resolution, 3× zoom, and premium metal construction in a genuinely pocketable package made it a strong choice for its time, even if the small LCD and Memory Stick-only storage show their age today.
