Very little signs of use throughout. A few tiny paint chips and the characteristic peeling anti-reflective layer on the touchscreen — typical for this model and era. All functions work perfectly.

The DSC-TX1 arrived in September 2009 as one of the first two cameras ever to use a back-illuminated CMOS sensor — Exmor R technology from Sony's camcorder line, now in a body 14.1mm thin. Twice the low-light sensitivity of conventional CMOS, Handheld Twilight stacking six frames into one clean shot, Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar glass, optical SteadyShot, and a fully touch-driven rear. A significant camera dressed as a fashion object.
NO FILTER: SHOT ON DSC-TX1

THE LOOKS
Officially grey, the TX1 reads as dark pewter in hand — brushed metal with warm undertones that sits somewhere between charcoal and smoked bronze depending on the light. The body is all metal at 94 × 58 × 17mm, with a sliding front plate that covers the lens and acts as the power switch. The entire rear is a 3-inch touchscreen with a single physical playback button. Nothing else interrupts the surface. Also available in silver, pink, and blue.
THE SPECS
The back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS was truly new technology in 2009 — twice the low-light sensitivity of conventional CMOS, crossing from Sony's camcorder line into a still camera for the first time. Handheld Twilight stacks six frames automatically in under a second to produce one clean image in dim rooms without flash. Anti Motion Blur does the same for moving subjects. Optical SteadyShot, Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 4× zoom covering 35–140mm, 10fps burst, 720p HD with HDMI output. 94 × 58 × 17mm, 142g.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
- One of the first two still cameras with a back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor: twice the low-light sensitivity of conventional CMOS, crossing over directly from Sony's camcorder line.
- Handheld Twilight stacking six frames automatically: captures six shots in under a second and combines them into one clean image — dim rooms without flash, no tripod required.
- 14.1mm metal body with sliding front plate as the power switch: open the cover and the camera turns on, close it and it powers off — no button to find, nothing to interrupt the surface.
THE VERDICT
The TX1 was the camera that introduced back-illuminated sensors to still photography — and it shows in use. Low-light shots that would grain out on contemporaries come back clean, Handheld Twilight handles dim rooms entirely without flash, and the 14.1mm body with its sliding cover is the T-series at its most committed. The grey-brown finish is the understated choice in the lineup — the one that reads as intentional rather than default.
