Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX20

Sony released the DSC-TX20 in February 2012 as a rugged compact that didn't look like one — sliding cover, 921k-dot touchscreen, Carl Zeiss glass, BSI Exmor R sensor. Rated waterproof to 5 metres when new, shockproof from 1.5m, dustproof, freezeproof to −10°C. After 13 years the seals will have aged, so treat it as weather-resistant rather than submersible. The orange finish still looks like a deliberate style choice.

THE LOOKS

The orange TX20 has a warm, saturated finish with a slightly textured surface that gives it grip the glossy versions don't. The body is 96 × 56 × 18mm, 133g, with the large sliding front cover housing the lens and the 3-inch touchscreen filling the rear. The sealed construction means every seam is flush — nothing flexes, nothing protrudes. At 18mm deep it sits flat in a pocket. Also available in black, blue, green, and pink.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

THE VERDICT

The TX20 was the tough camera for people who didn't want their camera to look tough. The sliding cover, touchscreen, and Zeiss glass make it look like a fashion compact — the rugged spec was always invisible, which was the point. The rubber seals have aged since 2012, so treat it as weatherproof rather than submersible. CMOS output is clean rather than characterful. Orange commits to the contradiction most fully.
