The DSC-W510 came out in early 2011 at the bottom of Sony's W-series — and it shows its priorities immediately. No optical stabilization, VGA-only video, one color option per SKU. What it does have: a 26mm wide-angle lens at a price point where 35mm was still the norm, Sweep Panorama borrowed from Sony's premium lineup, and a CCD sensor that produces images with more warmth than the CMOS competition at the same price.

THE LOOKS

The W510 in deep wine red is a different camera from the silver — the color has real depth to it, closer to burgundy than fire engine, and it catches light in a way that makes the otherwise plain body feel considered. At 96 × 54 × 20mm and 119g it still disappears into a pocket without discussion. The controls are minimal, the proportions balanced. Also available in silver, black, pink, and violet.

THE SPECS

12.1-megapixel 1/2.3-inch Super HAD CCD, ISO 80–3200. Sony 4× zoom, 26–104mm equivalent, f/2.8–5.9. Digital SteadyShot (no optical IS). BIONZ. 2.7-inch LCD (230k dots). iAuto. Sweep Panorama. Face Detection 8 faces, Smile Shutter. VGA/30fps video. SD/SDHC + MS Duo. 96 × 54 × 20mm, 119g.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • 26mm wide-angle at entry-level pricing: most competitors at this price started at 35mm — the extra reach toward wide was a real practical advantage for interiors and groups.
  • Sweep Panorama from Sony's premium lineup: the one-button panoramic mode was a flagship feature on more expensive Cyber-shots, here included without fanfare on a sub-$110 camera.
  • Super HAD CCD rather than CMOS: the sensor choice in 2011 was unusual at this price — CCD's characteristic color rendering visible in the output, especially in warmer light.

THE VERDICT

The W510 is the kind of camera that rewards low expectations. The 26mm wide-angle is the thing to know about — it's a meaningful edge over the 35mm competition at this price, useful for interiors, groups, and anything tight. The CCD sensor has a warmth that CMOS entry-levels of the era couldn't match. Digital SteadyShot isn't optical IS, but the wide starting point helps. Quiet, capable, and easy to underestimate.
