Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W510

The DSC-W510 came out in early 2011 at the bottom of Sony's W-series — and it shows its priorities immediately. No optical stabilization, VGA-only video, one color option per SKU. What it does have: a 26mm wide-angle lens at a price point where 35mm was still the norm, Sweep Panorama borrowed from Sony's premium lineup, and a CCD sensor that produces images with more warmth than the CMOS competition at the same price.

THE LOOKS

The W510 in deep wine red is a different camera from the silver — the color has real depth to it, closer to burgundy than fire engine, and it catches light in a way that makes the otherwise plain body feel considered. At 96 × 54 × 20mm and 119g it still disappears into a pocket without discussion. The controls are minimal, the proportions balanced. Also available in silver, black, pink, and violet.

THE SPECS

The 12.1-megapixel Super HAD CCD delivers the warm, slightly saturated output that defines early-2010s Sony compacts — the sensor type people are specifically chasing now. The 4× zoom starts at 26mm, which is wider than most rivals at this price and makes a real difference for indoor group shots and tight spaces. f/2.8 at the wide end is a respectable aperture.
