Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W520

The DSC-W520 came out in March 2011 as Sony's most stripped-back W-series entry at the time — 14.1 megapixels, a 25mm wide-angle lens, 5× zoom, and Sweep Panorama in a body just 21.2mm deep and 108g. No HD video, no optical stabilization, no manual controls. What it had was a Super HAD CCD sensor producing that warm, saturated early-2010s output, and a starting focal length of 25mm that fit more of the scene in frame than most rivals at the price.

THE LOOKS

In black, the W520 is a clean, unpretentious rectangle — 96.3 × 55.6 × 21.2mm with a smooth plastic front, the Sony lens barrel sitting slightly left of center, and the 2.7-inch LCD filling most of the rear. Minimal controls on the right edge, nothing protruding. At 108g it's one of the lightest cameras Sony made that year — the kind of thing that disappears into a pocket and stays there until you need it. Also available in silver and red.

THE SPECS

The 14.1-megapixel Super HAD CCD delivers the warm, slightly soft output that defines early-2010s Sony compacts at their most appealing. The 5× zoom starts at 25mm — wider than most rivals at this price, getting more of the scene in frame for groups and interiors. Digital SteadyShot rather than optical IS is the honest trade-off for the price — works fine in decent light. No HD video, VGA only, which matters less when the CCD output at base ISO is this good. No HD video and no optical stabilization are the honest trade-offs for the price and weight — but for daylight shooting and parties, this is exactly the camera that gets used instead of sitting in a drawer.
