CONDITION: 8.2/10

THE CAMERA IS IN EXCELLENT COSMETIC CONDITION WITH BARELY ANY SIGNS OF USE. THE BLACK BODY IS CLEAN AND SHOWS MINIMAL HANDLING MARKS. THE 2.7-INCH LCD SCREEN IS FREE OF SCRATCHES BUT HAS SOME DARKER STAINING ON THE BOTTOM AND LEFT SIDE OF THE SCREEN, THE ISSUE DOESN’T AFFECT THE PHOTOS. THE CARL ZEISS LENS IS PRISTINE WITH NO MARKS OR DUST. ALL FUNCTIONS WORK PERFECTLY AND THE CAMERA APPEARS LIGHTLY USED OR CAREFULLY STORED.

Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-W830 arrived in January 2014 as a budget-friendly point-and-shoot aimed at casual photographers who needed decent zoom range without breaking the bank. With a 20.1-megapixel sensor, Carl Zeiss-branded 8× optical zoom lens, and straightforward controls, it was designed for everyday snapshots and family photography. The W830 represented Sony's commitment to keeping affordable compact cameras accessible in an era when smartphones were increasingly dominating casual photography.

THE PICS

THE LOOKS

In black, the W830 has a simple, understated look that appeals to those who prefer an all-black aesthetic—no chrome accents, no flashy details, just clean monochrome styling. The plastic body is finished to mimic metal, with a traditional compact layout and the lens positioned center-left on the front panel. At just 122 grams and measuring 93 × 52 × 23mm, it's genuinely pocket-friendly and easy to carry anywhere.

THE SPECS

The W830 uses a 20.1-megapixel Super HAD CCD sensor paired with Sony's BIONZ image processor. The Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 8× optical zoom lens covers 25-200mm equivalent with Optical SteadyShot image stabilization. The 2.7-inch Clear Photo LCD with 230K-dot resolution handles composition and review. Video recording tops out at 720p HD at 30fps, and the camera features Sweep Panorama mode for up to 360° panoramic captures.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Generous 8× optical zoom: The 25-200mm equivalent range provided genuine telephoto reach for a budget compact, making it versatile for travel and family events.
  • USB charging convenience: The camera charged via standard Micro-USB cable, eliminating the need for proprietary chargers or cables.
  • Intelligent Auto mode: Scene recognition automatically adjusted settings based on shooting conditions, making it genuinely approachable for beginners.

THE VERDICT

The W830 is a straightforward, no-frills budget compact from Sony's value-oriented W-series. It delivered practical zoom range and high resolution at an accessible price point, making it a reliable everyday camera for casual shooters who wanted more reach than their phone could offer.
