Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1

Sony's DSC-WX1 came out in September 2009 and it was built to do one thing better than almost any pocket camera of its time: take good photos in low light. The trick was a bright lens paired with a new kind of sensor that soaks up more light — so dim bars, restaurants, and evening streets come out clear instead of dark and grainy. It also zooms 5×, fires off fast bursts, and has a mode that handles dark rooms without a flash.

In silver, the WX1 is a slim metal rectangle — 91 × 52 × 20mm, 149g — smaller and lighter than most cameras with this much zoom. The lens pokes out when you turn it on and tucks back in when you're done. The screen fills the back, the buttons sit off to the right, and the finish is a soft matte silver rather than shiny chrome. THE VERDICT

If you mostly shoot indoors, at night, or at parties, the WX1 is one of the few small cameras of its era that handled all well — the bright lens and light-hungry sensor keep things clear where other 2009 cameras forced a harsh flash. The multi-shot modes help even more in the dark. Its one limit is that it can't hold the shutter open long enough for pitch-black night shots. Silver keeps it low-key. A pocket camera that works after the sun goes down.
