BATTERY AND CHARGER INCLUDED. AN EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE OF SONY'S FLAGSHIP 160GB HDD HANDYCAM FROM 2011.
Sony's HDR-XR160E represented a step up in the hard drive Handycam lineup with a massive 160GB internal HDD and progressive scan recording for smoother motion than most consumer camcorders could manage at the time. Launched around 2011, it combined Sony's back-illuminated sensor technology for improved low-light performance with professional-grade G series optics and comprehensive stabilization. This was one of Sony's last serious pushes into hard drive camcorders before flash memory completely dominated the market, making it a swan song for the format with competitive specs.
THE LOOKS
The XR160E follows the traditional Handycam form factor but with slightly more bulk than flash memory models to accommodate the 160GB hard drive. The 3-inch touchscreen LCD is larger than earlier models and flips out for flexible viewing. Sony G lens branding on the barrel signals the professional-grade optics. Finished in black with clean lines that emphasized function over flash. The integrated USB cable tucks into the hand strap—a convenience feature that became standard across Sony's late Handycam lineup.
THE SPECS
The XR160E uses a 1/4-inch back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor. Records Full HD 1920×1080 at 50p progressive (PAL) to internal 160GB hard disk drive in AVCHD format, with multiple bitrate options. Sony G lens with 29.8mm wide angle, 30× optical zoom, 42× Extended zoom. Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode. 3-inch touchscreen LCD. Stores on internal HDD plus SD/SDHC/SDXC and Memory Stick PRO Duo slots. Intelligent Auto, Golf Shot mode, Tracking Focus. HDMI output, built-in USB cable. Supports both HD and standard definition recording modes.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
- 160GB hard drive with 50p Full HD recording: The combination of massive internal storage and progressive scan 1920×1080/50p gave smoother motion than typical 50i camcorders—rare at the consumer level in 2011.
- Back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor: The sensor's back-side illuminated construction improved light gathering significantly over traditional CMOS, enabling better low-light footage with less grain.
- 29.8mm wide-angle Sony G lens: The professional-grade G series optics with wide-angle coverage captured more of the scene than standard consumer lenses, useful for group shots and landscapes.
THE VERDICT
The HDR-XR160E represented Sony's top-tier hard drive camcorder technology before the format's obsolescence. The 160GB HDD was genuinely convenient for extended recording without card management, and the 50p Full HD recording with Exmor R sensor delivered quality that competed with flash memory models. However, the mechanical hard drive made it more fragile than solid-state alternatives, and by 2011-2012, flash memory camcorders were becoming both cheaper and more reliable, making the XR160E one of the last of its kind worth considering.
